A Major Campus Update: Fellowship Hall Expansion Begins August 17

Over the past several years, God has graciously brought growth to Calvary Fellowship Fountain Valley. Many of us feel that growth each week. The Sanctuary is often full, parking can be difficult, children's ministry rooms are stretched, and the Fellowship Hall is asked to serve children, classes, Bible studies, women's and men's ministry, youth, fellowship meals, special services, and community events.

For nearly two years, our leader and board members have been praying, gathering information, reviewing plans, comparing costs, and considering how the church should respond. We looked at broader options, including purchasing another campus, relocating, or pursuing entirely new construction. Those options proved far more costly, and suitable property in our area is extremely limited. After careful consideration, leadership believes that improving the campus God has already entrusted to us is the wisest and most responsible next step.

The first major step is the remodel and expansion of the Fellowship Hall. The project will add needed classroom, office, and storage space while also renewing the existing hall as a flexible place for discipleship, fellowship, teaching, children's ministry, youth, receptions, outreach, and other shared ministry uses. We are introducing the broader campus effort under the name “Making Room: Stewarding Growth, Preparing for Future Ministry.” This is not about building for appearance or growth by numbers. It is about removing practical barriers to ministry and faithfully caring for the people and opportunities the Lord has given us.

Construction began the week of Monday, August 17, and is currently expected to continue through late October or early November and the building will be closed for the duration of construction. Crews plan to complete interior demolition while excavation, utility work, and site preparation are underway outside so that several parts of the project can move forward at the same time.

Sunday morning Children's Church and Calvary Academy classes will experience the greatest temporary disruption. Weekly activities including Bible studies, Women's Ministry, Men's Ministry, and Youth will generally move to the Sanctuary or another available facility. Leadership is also reviewing the Fall Craft Fair and Light the Night outreach to determine what location, schedule, or format changes may be needed. We will communicate each confirmed change directly to the affected ministries and to the church family.

We are deeply thankful that, through God's provision, faithful giving, and careful stewardship over many years, leadership expects this work to move forward without the church taking on new debt. Please pray for wisdom, safety, unity, patience, good communication, and faithful stewardship. The inconvenience will be real, but it will be temporary. Our prayer is that the completed space will serve the work of ministry for many years to come.

Why are we doing this now?

Our present facilities are creating real limits for worship, children's ministry, classes, storage, parking, shared ministry space, and community events. Leadership believes it is time to address those needs before they become greater barriers to ministry.

How long has this been planned?

The pastors and board have worked on the campus needs, options, design, costs, and ministry impact for nearly two years. The public announcement is new, but the prayer, study, and planning behind it are not.

Why not purchase or build a different campus?

Leadership seriously considered relocation, purchasing another facility, and new construction. Those choices were significantly more expensive, and suitable land or buildings in our area are very limited. Improving our current property appears to be the most faithful and financially responsible path.

How will the project be paid for?

The project represents several hundred thousand dollars of investment. Because of God's provision, faithful giving, and prudent stewardship, leadership expects the Fellowship Hall work to proceed without requiring the church to incur debt or placing the church in a poor financial position.

The South Africa Mission is headquartered in Port Shepstone, South Africa, located about 60 miles south of Durban, on the east coast of the African continent and bordered by the Indian Ocean.

The ministry has been headed by native South African, Maggie Moonsamy, for more than 50 years. She has worked tirelessly, sharing the gospel message, establishing churches, and providing food and clothing to the many hundreds of poor in the rural settlements surrounding Port Shepstone. 

She has also worked in conjunction with the South African government and local radio stations to provide AIDS education and training for residents.

Maggie is assisted in the ministry by her daughter and son in law, Shirley and Robert Balkaran, along with various local pastors and members of the Alpha Assembly Church of Port Shepstone.
